Taxes!?

March 13th, 2006 at 7:50PM in

So, I have a tax return coming...and while I should save it..my technolust is in full swing..

So the question is, what to buy?

On one hand, I am a cellular junky. As previously mentioned, there just isn't anything interesting....except the "T-Mobile MDA" (this is also known as the O2 XDA, Qtek 9100 and iMate KJam, I believe the "official" name is "Wizard", but they only sell through retailers for rebranding). It runs on Windows Mobile 5.0, which is pretty handy since it will run most PocketPC/Windows CE apps. It also has EDGE support (highspeed cellular internet), Bluetooth and 802.11g (WiFi-G/Airport Extreme).

On the other hand, there is the Nokia 770. Dave and I played with one of these when we went up to visit Amy, and lemme say this: It's small. Like not "damnit, this thing is too small". Like "OMG l33t! How the fuck did they make something this small this awesome!? Also has 802.11g and bluetooth, runs on linux with a pretty healthy community already springing around it. Best part? All THREE of my nokia phones use the same charge as it, so I wouldn't have to worry about finding a place to charge it (between wall and car adapters, I am more than covered).

Finally, there is the 60gb iPod. I know, I must be the last person on the face of the planet to own an iPod (well, I technically did own one for a short while, but that's another story). All of these are reasonably with the same price range. Now for the pros/cons

Considering that I am a cell junky, the odds of me hanging onto the MDA for an extended period of time are slim. While I will most likely be able to sell it for a reasonable price, I will lose the functionality of a PDA. This means at some point in the probable near future I will have to come up with a strategy for moving my data (easily) to a new device...and well, that's a huge pain in the dick. And I don't want to feel like I can't jump to a new phone because I will lose functionality (IE PDA).

In consideration of the Nokia 770, I run into the problem that there aren't as many apps for it as there are for Windows Mobile/PocketPC. It would also mean carrying a second device, which is kind of a bummer. Believe it or not, While I am a techno-whore..I prefer to carry as little shit as possible. Which is a constant battle because finding multi-function devices (that work well) is nigh impossible. Finally, it uses RS-MMC, which is a mixed bag IMHO. On one hand, it would share the same storage type as my Nokia 7610, the downside is that it's still (sort of) pricey, and capacity is limited to around a gig. It's also not a terribly popular format, so odds are good that I will end up buying memory cards that work only in the 770 (or my latest Nokia phone)

As for the iPod...I can't really even justify the purchase beyond "I want one". Apples marketing must be just that damned effective. I can't really come up with a good reason for owning one. I don't have a car to listen to it in. The cars I do ride in frequently don't have the appropriate connections (assuming they would even let me jack my music in), and we won't even discuss the fact that I spend around 1 hour TOTAL a week in a car. When I get home, I have my computer(s) with all my music, at work I have my laptop with all my music, on the extended road I still have my Powerbook. Because I have two laptops and broadband connections available, the notion of a portable hard drive doesn't even really sell me. Honestly, beyond the rare convenience, I have no reason for wanting one.

Goddamned you apple!

So, for the two of you who read (and the one that replies), whaddya think I should spend it on (and saying "save it" doesn't count, because that's just not likely.

Unrelated news (well, sort of related). I should have my 7280 battery by the weekend, which means that sweet little minx will be operational again.

Also, I found some great shirts at Macys that I intend to buy...  $39 and they are really nice...
Now I just need to find a store that has reasonably priced blazers... It looks like I will be checking salvo this week.

Oh yeah, and Microsoft (forever pissing on the x64 users) is actually going to release a 64 bit build of IE7. You may wonder why this is important? Well, IE6 64 is still IE6, which means it's trash, and the Deer Park x64 Alphas just are too buggy to really use.

::end transmission::
