Socks!

August 29th, 2003 at 12:55AM in

Do you own a dryer? Do you own socks? Do you frequently own one less sock after a combination of the two?

Thought so.

Ever thought about a mindless activity that involves exchanging orpan socks with other strangers?

Didn't think so.

I own socks. Most people do. In fact, I own a lot of socks. Most of mine are the same in style, color, shape, and odor. Why? To combat disappearing sock syndrome, of course. Did it work? NO! Of course not. So what should I do with all of these socks with no mates? There is only one solution:

Send them to strangers.

That's right. For those of you who don't quite understand the principle behind this, let me give you a quick science lesson. Socks create static electricity through the excitement of lintions (scientists in the audience will be familiar with lintions). Excited lintions need to "party". If you've ever tried throwing a party in a dryer, you understand the difficulty. With no place to party, the lintions use all the built up energy to create a space-time warp-wormhole thing in the back of your dryer. The problem is that the creation of this worm hole (etc) drains a lot of the energy from the lintions. Without all the surplus energy, there isn't enough energy for both socks to go.

So much like any healthy relationship, the dominant member (in this case, sock) will go to the party, leaving the submissive mate behind. This submissive mate will usually sit on the couch, bitching to the other mates about how "he is such an ass, and he just doesn't care about my feelings." Sooner or later (in my case, later) the owner will clear out the dryer, only to discover the missing sock.

Which brings us to the sock exchange. Since everyone has MIA socks, with a crying whiny mate left behind, it stands to reason, that if you send a matchless mate to someone, and they in turn do the same, sooner or later, it may be re-united.

So, here is what I am going to be doing. I am going to be creating a page on the site that allows registered members of the site to sign up as a member of the Sock Exchange. As a member, you will be honor bound to send at least one sock to another member (and log it on the site) with your information. The recipient will be obligated to send you a sock in return (also logging it on the site). This way, everyone gets a sock, everyone sends a sock, and we (the enquiring sock minds) can keep track of the socks.

To spice it up a bit, I will offer the first people who can show a legitimate random match (to be verified by me, all decisions final) a free freezerpants t-shirt of their choosing.

If that takes too long (probably forever, the odds are astronomical) I may extend the free t-shirt to the most active sock-sender on the site.
